The good, the bad, the ugly
The Good: It is a pretty straightforward medieval style fantasy. No magic users, but plenty of knights and archers and kings and such. It is a well crafted story. There is a lot of set up, but I did find it necessary to the story. Will is an incredibly likeable character, in fact, there are just a ton of incredibly likeable characters within the story. There are clear good guys and bad guys, which I find is missing from a lot of our modern literature. This is just a solid book and well worth the time and money.
The Bad: If you have a young reader who is sensitive to violence, there are a few parts in the book that might be hard for them. There is also a ton of bullying. The bullies get “what they deserve” in the end, but it was a bit rough for a while. There are some romantic interest moments, but they don’t really go anywhere. The book isn’t Shakespeare, treat it like a fun and more casual read and you won’t be disappointed.
The Ugly: Nothing too ugly! Like I said earlier, there may be some uncomfortable moments for sensitive readers.
All in all, this is just a fun read. It is not heavy at all. It is a world I want to visit or be part of, they are characters I want to know. If you are looking for Hobbit level depth, it isn’t here, but I don’t always need or want that level of reading. We will see what happens with the series as it progresses!
