Just the good
The Good: Really well thought out and laid out book for history. They start with history and then layer on additional history. This allows it to develop in a way that gives you a clear picture of how the area grew over time. I really appreciated the amount of time they spent highlighting lesser known characters in history and not just making it about Daniel Boone, but still giving Boone the credit he deserves. I really feel like I understand the area I see today and how it developed into what it is. I also loved the end where they tell you what the views are like from the different hotels, that was fun!
We are currently doing Kentucky history over the summer. In Kentucky, students get state history around 4th grade. And while I in no way think that I need to do what the schools do, I do think having state history is important. I thought it was a great bridge subject for the summer as we are finishing up curriculum but not quite ready to start new curriculum. This book fits nicely into that plan. It was a short read and not terribly difficult. It imparted a great deal of information, and the layered fashion really built up your knowledge as the book went along. Definitely worth the time.
