The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

The Good – Like the first book in the series, this was phenomenal. Rowling does such a great job of flushing out characters. She also has the ability to write in both main characters points of view without it sounding weird or confusing. This second book really delves into the two characters personal lives and lets us see more motivation for Robin to be where she is at. It hints at things just enough to make you want to read more, but not enough to get annoying. I am fairly confident that Rowling will be considered one of the best writers of our time.

The Bad – Ok, this may or may not be a bad for everyone and just be me . . . The book revolves around a book. In the book in a book real people are depicted as characters. So person X in the main book is character Y in the book in a book. I had to keep flipping back to the part where the book in the book is described to keep it all straight. I didn’t like that. I eventually ended up bookmarking some pages for easy reference.

The Ugly – NOT FOR KIDS. I am sure she didn’t intend for kids to ever read this, but I need to state it. Grateful she leaves out any detail. There is language and extramarital sex, like the first book in the series, but it was a bit more in this book. Also, the whole mystery/murder revolves around setting it up as a sexual act and the murdered person had some fetishes. Interestingly, Rowling is able to make that a side note and we don’t get all consumed by it as a reader. It is not presented in any way to make it erotic. The characters also seem to brush over it and handle it dispassionately, so it is only a caution.
