The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

Jacy and Jed are newly married and freshly pregnant. They head to Michigan’s UP to spend time with Jed’s dad. They are having a great time until Jacy has a health scare. The story then takes a turn as Jacy begins to feel trapped by her husband, father in law and even the local doctor.

The Good I didn’t really want to like the story because it felt like a political rant against the patriachy and I really don’t like my fiction reading to be political if I can avoid it. I ended up somewhat liking the story though, despite the political undertones. It was really the story of a woman overcoming her own bad choices to emerge as a stronger better version of herself. The tension was also well written. I could feel it in every chapter, page, paragraph, and word.

The Bad – The politics. It felt like a rant against men and it was. The author inadvertantly hit on the real problem and that was that the father in law’s money made him have all the power. I also understand that Jed was a broken character. I wished he wasn’t though, I kept wishing through the whole book he would be a man and stand up to his father. The problem was the author didn’t want him to. She wanted Jacy to be the strong one in the book. She was very successful in that endeavor.

The Ugly – This book was rated R. There are several sex scenes that were too much for me. These scenes were also written in a way that made me feel like the sex between Jacy and Jed was somehow abusive, like their best sex was when he was angry or in some sort of mood produced from his father. It was very weird. The book also discusses abortion. Tricky topic and I am not sure if I liked how it was handled. It again is politics inserted into my fiction!
